It looks like there is an over arching plot with someone plotting behind. To kill Jinshi. To make sure his daughter is the one who bears the next emperor… something like that. But overall, it still feels rather episodic. It becomes wierd seeing Mao Mao doing all this as a mere servant only supposed to mope the hallways… She continously suffers from this lacking status, too, like how she was hit hard for being a maid-servant when trying to enter the ceremony. Actually, they had to use the excuse of her willing to risk her life for a bezoar, to make sure the story could progress. It is far-fetched to say the least. If the whole story is about solving a mystery, there is no need to drag it on so much. If the story is about Mao Mao and how she navigates and overcome this dangerous place that is the palace, it drags on too. As a result, i am starting to wonder what this manga tries to tell.
