I think he was killed by the emperor that he mentioned because he was fighting alone but now he has his brothers/comrades so he is leveling them up so they all can defeat him

Did you not read this chapter properly? He said exactly why he did that, since he will not be able to be close to them once they get separated in different sects. So he has to do everything possible to help them now before they reach dragonic ruins.
I don’t think he was killed by the emperor because he did say in the earlier chapter that he was beat up to death by a couple of demon beasts eventho his rank was heavenly fate. He feels no fear since he is too OP so he just rush into danger without thinking of the risks he might get and ended getting killed
